DefendPR’s immersive storytelling approach seeks to create on and offline spaces that transcend geographic boundaries in order to connect the many diasporic Boricua communities that exist elsewhere in the world, with the people living on the archipelago
Since 2016, our aim has been to challenge the deficit narrative and focus on a narrative of hope and the self-sustainability of Puerto Ricans.
Because of this, the content we create highlights community self-empowerment - Puerto Ricans who are actively working to change their situation, take control of their current conditions and manifest a self-determined future.
In our recent years, we have become a multi-faceted initiative that explores a plethora of ways in which stories can be used as a tool for transformation.
While traditional media approaches try to fill the "knowledge gap," media advocacy seeks to address the "power gap.” For us, and in this realm, this means making the ability to influence political and cultural change accessible to those we are able to reach. To further address this “power gap”, we see the need in investing and guiding a collective network of young storytellers and content creators with developing and implementing their own public awareness and advocacy campaigns on the island.
collective work
Our collective is currently made up of content creators, communications strategists and producers that are based in Puerto Rico. We operate with no full-time staff with an awareness and clear intention of distributing resources to creatives and grassroots organizations who collaborate and want to grow with us.
